The String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is a timeless and eye-catching trailing plant, loved for its cascading strands of bead-like foliage. Each delicate stem is lined with round, pea-shaped leaves that spill effortlessly over the edges of pots and shelves, creating a lush, sculptural display.
Perfect for hanging planters or high shelves, this trailing succulent can grow long flowing strands up to several metres in length when happy. With its unique texture and elegant trailing habit, it's easy to see why the String of Pearls remains a favourite in any indoor plant collection.
Plant care
The String of Pearls is a true succulent and thrives in a well-draining soil mix. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, as this plant does not tolerate soggy soil or wet feet. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
This plant prefers bright light and can handle some gentle direct sun, particularly morning light, but harsh midday sun may scorch the leaves. It is best suited to average indoor temperatures between 18-25C.
Feed lightly with a diluted fertiliser during the warmer growing months to encourage healthy growth, and reduce watering and feeding during cooler months.
